Immigration Topics for Visitors to Canada

  • Citizens of some countries (such as Germany, USA, and Hong Kong) can travel to Canada without Visitors Visas. Others (such as India and Taiwan) cannot.
  • Each person who enters legally as a Visitor gets an automatic grant of six months stay unless otherwise limited by the immigration officer. This is true whether or not they get a stamp in their passports or whether they get a Visitor Record stapled into their passport.
  • Visitors can apply for further extensions of their Visitor status in Canada by applying for such at the Case Processing Center in Vegreville, Alberta. They must provide reasons for the request and proof of funds to support themselves.
  • Visitors can study in Canada without a Study Permit as long as the course of study is no longer than six months. Language schools are popular.
  • Visitors generally cannot change their status in Canada. If they want to get Study Permits, Work Permits, or Canadian Permanent Residence (landed immigrant) Status, they must apply at a Canadian Visa Office outside Canada. This can be done by mail, but often requires a personal interview at the Visa Office.
  • Addenda for Visitors

Someone who comes into Canada legally, but then neglects or forgets to renew their Visitor Status can apply for Restoration of Visitor Status, as long as they make the application within 90 days of the expiry of their original legal status.
